Is aluminium in skincare dangerous?

Aluminium in cosmetics gets talked about a lot. Most of the concern comes from studies of one specific compound (aluminium chlorohydrate) used one specific way (in antiperspirant deodorants, applied daily under the arm). Alum stone is a different aluminium compound, used differently, on different skin. The science on one does not automatically apply to the other. Here is what is known, what is contested, and what actually applies to using an alum stone after shaving.

The short version

For external use on intact skin, potassium alum has been used cosmetically for thousands of years with no established evidence of harm. The mineral is a stable salt. Applied to the top layer of skin and rinsed off, it is not absorbed in any meaningful amount. The concerns you have read about aluminium in cosmetics almost always come from a different compound in a different context.

The two things people get confused

Almost every article about "aluminium in cosmetics" is about one of two products.

Antiperspirant deodorant usually contains aluminium chlorohydrate or a similar compound. It is applied every day, under the arm, sometimes right after shaving, and stays on the skin for hours. It works by blocking sweat glands.

Alum stone is potassium aluminium sulphate. It is a solid mineral. It is used only after shaving, only on external skin, glided on wet, and rinsed off within seconds. It works by tightening the top layer of skin, not by blocking sweat glands.

Both contain aluminium. That is where the similarity ends. Different compound, different use, different exposure. The studies on one do not tell you anything about the other.

What the research actually says

The concern that has driven most of the alarm about aluminium in cosmetics comes from a small number of studies suggesting a possible link between long-term antiperspirant use and either breast cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. Two things to know about those studies.

First, they are specifically about antiperspirant compounds absorbed through freshly shaved underarm skin. Not about alum stone applied externally elsewhere on the body.

Second, they remain contested. Major cancer research organisations, including the American Cancer Society and Cancer Research UK, have both concluded that current evidence does not support a link between antiperspirant use and breast cancer. The link to Alzheimer’s has been examined for decades and is not currently supported by the mainstream research consensus.

Even in the disputed studies about antiperspirants, potassium alum was not the compound being studied.

Why absorption matters

The claim behind aluminium-in-cosmetics worry is that aluminium gets absorbed through the skin, builds up in the body, and eventually causes harm. Whether that is true depends heavily on the compound and the context of use.

Potassium alum sits on the top layer of intact skin, releases a small amount of mineral, and rinses off. The top layer of skin (the stratum corneum) is designed as a barrier. Ionic mineral salts of this type do not pass through it in any significant amount. This has been examined in studies of alum used cosmetically. The amount of aluminium that reaches the bloodstream from occasional external alum stone use is negligible.

By contrast, antiperspirants are formulated to interact with the skin at the site of application every day for years. The exposure is completely different.

What about food-grade alum?

Potassium alum is used as a food additive in some countries, mostly as a firming agent in pickles and some traditional baked goods. Food-grade alum is the same compound as cosmetic-grade alum.

Ingestion is a different exposure route than skin contact. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives has set daily intake guidelines for aluminium generally. External application of an alum stone does not add significantly to that daily intake because the mineral is not absorbed through the top layer of intact skin.

Who should be extra careful

External alum stone use has an extremely low risk profile, but there are situations where extra caution makes sense.

People with kidney disease. The kidneys clear aluminium from the body. People with reduced kidney function should discuss any regular exposure to any aluminium-containing product with their doctor.

Broken or infected skin. Do not use alum on cuts, active folliculitis, or eczema flares. This is a general skincare rule, not specific to alum.

Mucous membranes. Never use alum on the inner labia, inside the mouth, or on any mucous membrane. Always external skin only.

Children. Not necessary for children and no reason to introduce it.

What the research does not say

There is currently no evidence that potassium alum, used externally on intact adult skin, contributes to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, or any other disease of aluminium accumulation. This is the honest state of the research. It has been in cosmetic use for a very long time and continues to be considered safe for that use.

If you want to avoid all aluminium contact for any reason, do not use an alum stone. That is a legitimate personal choice. But it is a preference, not a medical warning.

Is alum stone the same as aluminium metal?

No. Alum is a salt. The aluminium is bound into a stable compound. It does not behave like pure aluminium metal.

Can I use alum stone if I want to avoid antiperspirants?

What if I still do not want any aluminium in my routine?

That is fine. There are non-aluminium post-shave options. They do not work the same way, but they exist. Alum is the most effective cosmetic astringent for closing the skin after shaving; other options are usually cooling gels or emollient creams that soothe redness rather than prevent it.
