How does alum stone work on skin?

An alum stone works by tightening the top layer of skin. When you wet it and glide it across your skin, a small amount of the mineral dissolves onto the surface. The mineral pulls proteins in the top layer of skin together. The surface contracts slightly. Any shallow openings from a razor, wax, or small nick close. That is the whole mechanism.

The step-by-step mechanism
