The best thing to put on your skin after shaving

 ·  5 min read

The best thing to put on your skin after shaving does one job: it closes the top layer of skin the razor just opened. That is it. Everything else you have been sold as a post-shave product either sits on top of the fresh skin without closing it, or actively makes things worse by trapping bacteria against it. The right answer is an astringent that tightens the top layer. In practice: an alum stone.

What your skin actually needs after shaving

A razor does two things at the same time. It cuts hair. And it removes the top layer of dead skin cells. That is why freshly shaved skin feels so smooth for a few hours: partly it is the removed hair, partly it is the removed dead layer.

Under that dead layer is the fresh skin. It is not injured, but it is now exposed. For the next few hours, three things attack it. Friction from your clothes. Sweat and salt. Bacteria that live on your skin all the time.

The right post-shave product prevents those three from ever reaching the fresh skin. It does that by tightening the top layer so it closes fast, before the redness can form. Nothing else you rub in accomplishes this.

Ranked: what to put on freshly shaved skin

From most effective to least effective, based on how well each option closes the fresh skin.

1. Alum stone (potassium alum)

A solid mineral crystal, wet and glided over freshly shaved skin, then rinsed. It tightens the top layer of the skin in the seconds after use. The redness that would show up an hour later does not form. Used correctly, it is by far the most effective option. Downsides: none for the mechanism itself, though you have to buy a proper stone and use it right after every shave.

2. A plain gel with witch hazel

Witch hazel is a mild plant-based astringent. It works on the same principle as alum but weaker. If you cannot get alum, plain witch hazel gel with no added fragrance is the next best option. Downsides: much less effective than alum, and most witch hazel products on shelves have fragrance or alcohol added, which cancels the benefit.

3. Cool water for thirty seconds

Not a product, just a rinse. The last thirty seconds of your shower on cool water constricts blood vessels near the surface and reduces the redness reaction. This is free and always available. It does not close the skin the way alum does, but it slows the reaction. A useful step even when you also use an alum stone.

4. A very light unscented moisturiser

If you have naturally dry skin, a light unscented moisturiser (not a heavy body butter) is fine to use the following morning. Not right after shaving. Right after shaving, oil-based products can trap bacteria against the fresh skin, which is exactly what you want to avoid.

5. Aloe vera gel

Cools the skin, feels nice, does not close the top layer. It soothes redness that has already appeared instead of preventing it. If you already have razor burn, aloe helps you feel better. It does not solve the underlying problem.

6. Body lotion

Puts a layer of oil over the fresh skin. Can trap bacteria against it, which makes bumps more likely a few days later. On some people, body lotion right after shaving clogs each follicle and causes exactly the razor bumps it was meant to prevent. Skip for at least an hour after shaving. Twelve hours is better.

7. Aftershave (traditional splash)

Mostly alcohol, sometimes with fragrance and menthol. Kills surface bacteria (partly), stings (a lot), dries the skin (yes), and does not close the top layer (which is the actual job). This is a hundred-year-old formula that most people keep buying because they have never used a proper astringent.

Not on the list

Coconut oil: heavy, clogs follicles for many people, sits on top of the fresh skin.

Baby oil: same issue as coconut oil. Also unnecessary fragrance.

Vaseline / petroleum jelly: forms a barrier but seals sweat and bacteria against the fresh skin. Do not use right after shaving.

Perfume, body spray, scented deodorant: never on freshly shaved skin. Always waits at least an hour, ideally longer.

What order to do things in

The order matters more than most people realise.

  1. Warm shower, warm water shave.
  2. Final rinse on cool water for thirty seconds.
  3. Alum stone: wet, glide, rinse.
  4. Pat dry, do not rub.
  5. Leave the skin alone for the next hour. No product, no clothing that rubs, no perfume.
  6. The next morning, if your skin is dry, a light unscented moisturiser.

This is the whole routine. The alum stone is the one step that stops razor burn from ever showing up. Everything else supports it.

Different areas, same principle

Legs, outer bikini line, and underarms all follow the same principle. Close the top layer of the fresh skin fast. Alum works on all three areas (external skin only, never on mucous membranes).

The face for men follows the same principle. The neck especially benefits from a proper astringent step because that is where razor burn is worst on men.

Frequently asked questions

What should I use if I have very sensitive skin?

Alum stone. It contains no fragrance, no alcohol, no acid, no oil. Just one mineral. Most fragrance-free "sensitive skin" post-shave products still contain many ingredients your skin has to react to. A pure alum stone contains one.

Do I need something different for dry skin?

Same routine right after shaving. Add a light unscented moisturiser the next morning if your skin is dry.

Can I use alum stone every time I shave?

Yes. That is the intended use. Every shave, wet the stone, glide over the freshly shaved area, rinse. Done.

What if I have a small nick?

Alum stops small nicks from bleeding within seconds. That is why barber shops have used it for over a hundred years. You may feel a brief sting, then the bleeding stops.

Will an alum stone dry my skin out?

The tightening feeling lasts a minute or two and then fades. It does not strip natural moisture the way an alcohol aftershave does. If you already have very dry skin, moisturise the next morning as usual.

The Mineral

Calm freshly shaved skin. So it looks like you actually shaved.

Wet the Mineral. Glide it over freshly shaved skin. Rinse. That's the whole routine.
